Two people arrested in Zapata county for attempting to smuggle 3 migrants

Two men were arrested for transporting three migrants to Zapata County, according to an arrest affidavit.

At approximately 12:35 p.m. on September 26, an officer traveling on US 83 north of Zapata saw three people coming out of the brush and colliding with a blue Honda CR-V that was parked on the shoulder of the southbound lane. from the highway. Two weeks before this incident, the border patrol had received reports of a Honda CR-V picking up people in the same area, according to court documents.

The agent arrested the CR-V. The officer identified Jimmy Sanchez as the driver and Oscar Sanchez III as the passenger, both US citizens. But authorities determined that three other passengers were Mexican citizens who had crossed the border illegally.


In a post-arrest interview, Jimmy Sanchez said someone contacted him via social media with instructions to transport three migrants to Laredo. Jimmy Sanchez added that he and Oscar Sanchez III picked up migrants along the road near Zapata. Jimmy Sanchez was reportedly paid $ 500 per migrant, the affidavit states.

Oscar Sanchez III also agreed to make a statement after the arrest. He said he and Jimmy Sanchez were going to pick up the migrants but didn’t know how much Jimmy Sanchez was going to be paid, according to court documents.

Each has been charged with transport, attempted transport and conspiracy to transport migrants.
