Kolkata, Feb 15 (PTI) Trinamool MP and Congress actor Deepak Adhikari, who is popularly known by his screen name Dev, appeared before CBI detectives here on Tuesday to face questioning in connection with the central agency’s investigation into a multi-crore cattle smuggling racket operating along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, a source said.
Dev’s name surfaced several times during questioning of those charged in the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation source said.
“Dev appeared before our officials at the Nizam Palace office here as he was summoned in connection with the cattle smuggling case. He is being questioned,” the source said.
The CBI had previously interviewed several people, including Bikash Mishra, brother of Binay Mishra, a businessman who was allegedly involved in racketeering and considered close to West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress.
The agency also interviewed Enamul Haque, the main defendant in the case.
Bikash Mishra and Haque were taken into CBI custody, and the latter was recently released on bail by the Supreme Court.
Bikash Mishra was also arrested by another law enforcement branch of Delhi central agency on March 16 last year. The ED is investigating the money laundering aspect of the case.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Binay Mishra in the cattle smuggling case as he absconded.
The two central agencies had previously carried out searches at the residences of Mishra and her brother.
It is alleged that cattle smugglers bribed BSF and Customs officers to maintain their illegal activity.
The CBI had also apprehended a former commander of the 36 BSF battalion for his alleged involvement in the racketeering.
The agency had filed a lawsuit against Haque and the BSF official in the case. PTI SCH BDC BDC
