Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Politburo member Varla Ramaiah has urged the additional DGs of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Vigilance & Enforcement (V&E) to carry out a thorough investigation into the alleged large-scale smuggling of PDS rice to foreign countries. by the port of Kakinada.

In separate letters to officials on Sunday, Mr Ramaiah stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the “sudden and suspicious surge” in rice exports from the East Godavari district port.

Mr. Ramaiah urged officials to take a closer look at the port’s rice export data to overseas destinations.

Data available on the Agricultural Commodities Export Development Authority website showed that rice exports from Kakinada Port grew by 18.90 lakh ton (worth ₹4,483 crore) in 2018 -19 to 31.51 lakh ton (worth ₹7,972 crore) in 2020-21.

Exports reached 30.30 lakh ton worth ₹7,710 crore by 2021-22 (until November). Data from APEDA further showed that rice exports from the port increased by 10.13 lakh tonnes to five West African countries by 2020-21 compared to 2018-19.

“The increase in rice export volume, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, is only possible due to large-scale smuggling,” he alleged. “Some leaders of the ruling YSRCP are allegedly involved in racketeering,” he alleged.
