Senator Sherry Rehman slams PM Imran Khan’s ‘bizarre’ speech

LAHORE: Tackling Prime Minister Imran Khan, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman called the announced relief program in a speech to the nation “bizarre.”

“The responsible Pakistani minister gave a bizarre speech in which he said that all the unprecedented inflation, oil tsunami, gas prices and essentials are due to past governments and international markets,” said the parliamentary leader of the PPP in the Senate.

Rehman pointed out that Prime Minister Imran Khan “forgot” that his party government from 2008 to 2013 faced higher global oil prices, with the essential commodity being sold at $ 130 a barrel. She added that despite the rise in oil prices, the price of gasoline was “still half of today’s prices and the rupee remained strong, while exports were the highest on record and that wheat imports were no longer necessary ”.

“The Prime Minister clearly lives in a parallel universe where he cannot see the pain inflicted on the Pakistani people by the prices which rise every two days and become completely unsustainable for the whole country and not just for the 20 million people. Said Rehman.

The senator said it was “ironic” that the “largest social assistance program in Pakistan’s history” targets only 20 million people rather than the country’s 220 million people.

“Inflation in the country cannot be controlled by giving interviews or doing talk shows. The Prime Minister has seen soaring inflation at least 17 times, but not once has he shared a plan of action. A strong economic stimulus plan is the need of the moment, ”said the senator.

Criticizing the government’s decision to introduce subsidies, the leader of the PPP said that if inflation could be controlled by such measures, then “sugar would not be sold at Rs 120 per kg”.

“It’s easy to blame others for hiding your own incompetence and that’s something this government has been doing since taking office. It was first the opposition, then it was the international market; is the high price of sugar also due to fluctuations in international markets? The Prime Minister has to talk about the prosperity of Banigala because life in this Naya Pakistan has become extremely difficult for the people, ”she said.

“If we compare our situation with other countries like India and Bangladesh, Pakistan’s economic indicators are the worst in the whole region. The economy is slowing down and it is unfortunately the least of the concerns of this government, ”concluded the vice-president of the PPP.

PM unveils Pakistan’s ‘biggest welfare program’

Earlier today, Prime Minister Imran unveiled Pakistan’s “biggest welfare program” in a televised address to the nation.

“Today I am really happy that we are [announcing] Pakistan’s largest welfare program, ”Prime Minister Imran said. He added that it took “three years” for the government to collect data from families who found themselves in “difficult circumstances”.

“It was not easy for us to give grants and it was based on assumptions. Now we have a complete database, so I am in this position that I can announce this program in front of you, ”Prime Minister Imran said in his speech.

While sharing the details of the package, Prime Minister Imran said it will benefit 20 million families and that in total 130 million people will benefit. The envelope will be Rs120 billion in total, he said.

“In this you [common man] will get 30% off in stores on ghee, wheat and lentils, ”Prime Minister Imran said. He explained that the common man would benefit as the government will provide a 30% subsidy on these items.

“It will be for the next six months, so the difficult period passes,” Prime Minister Imran said, adding that the federal and provincial governments would pay for the grant.

“As our tax increases, we can also increase it. But right now, out of necessity, the government is doing this [for some time]», Declared Prime Minister Imran.

The “second largest program” in “Pakistani history” which has been launched by the Prime Minister is the Kamyab Pakistan program.

“We will provide interest-free loans to 4 million families,” Prime Minister Imran said.

Under the program, interest-free loans will be given for the construction of houses, while interest-free loans of Rs 500,000 will be given to farmers to raise their land. While in the cities, loans of 500,000 rupees will be given to small businesses.

“And a person from a family will receive qualified training so that they can stand up and help their family,” Prime Minister Imran said. As part of the same program, the Kamyab Jawan program is also connected, he added.

The Prime Minister said that under the program, the government has granted 30 billion rupees in loans to 22,000 small businesses.

“With this is tied the largest scholarship program in Pakistan. This is important because all that can help raise our lower class is education, ”Prime Minister Imran said. He added that 6 million scholarships are awarded under the program.

The prime minister said the latest program the government is expanding is the health card so sick families have money for treatment.

” Goal [health card] will be that every sick family has money and [have the option] to go to any hospital for treatment, ”Prime Minister Imran said. He added that the card is already available in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“We are also launching this in Islamabad and we will be there in a month or two,” Prime Minister Imran said. He added that the program will be extended to the Punjab by December and fully cover the province by March of next year.

The prime minister said the PTI coalition government in Balochistan was also invited to present the initiative.

“In Sindh because they [PPP] have their own government, I will also ask them to start it as well, ”Prime Minister Imran said.
