“The smugglers transport PDS rice from Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh. The smuggled rice is sent to PA millers who in turn polish it and return it to their smuggling partners. This, in turn , is sold at a higher price to people at Rs 40 per kilo on the open market or is smuggled into Karnataka,” the former chief minister pointed out in the letter.

He also listed at least seven road routes through which rice smuggling was carried out.

“Over the past 16 months, approximately 13 cases have been recorded under the Essential Commodities Act at four different police stations in Kuppam (the border precinct he represents) in PA. This clearly highlights the volume of PDS rice smuggling that takes place on the Andhra-Tamil border of Nadu,” noted Chandrababu Naidu.

Noting that the “lack of vigilance” at the border favored smuggling, he asked Stalin to intensify vigilance to curb rice smuggling.

The Leader of the Opposition in the PA Assembly also wrote a similar letter to the Chief Secretary of State asking for increased vigilance along the PA-Tamil Nadu-Karnataka borders to control the threat of the smuggling.
