Human trafficking attempt stopped in Zapata

An attempted human trafficking was stopped in Zapata following a vehicle stop.

The Zapata County Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday that five people were arrested at around 12:13 p.m. on Wednesday.

The ZCSO said agents were working on Operation Stone Garden north of Zapata on North Route 83.

There, MPs reportedly made a motor vehicle stop on a red 2020 Toyota Corolla with Texas paper plates.

The ZCSO said officers determined that an individual was smuggling during the shutdown.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Osvaldo Daniel Alvarado, who was traveling with four passengers in the trunk of the Corolla.

The ZCSO said two of those people were Mexican nationals and the other two were Brazilian nationals.

The five individuals were all handed over to the US border patrol in the Zapata area, and the vehicle was taken to the ZCSO impound.
