New Delhi [India]May 10 (ANI): The Directorate of Fiscal Intelligence (DRI) successfully thwarted organized racketeering attempts to smuggle gold by air by making two successive seizures in Lucknow and Mumbai last week, which had a common method of concealment of gold.
After developing an accurate intelligence, on May 6, officers from the Directorate of Tax Intelligence (DRI) inspected a shipment that had arrived from Dubai at the Air Cargo Complex, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
In the import documents, the item was declared as “sectional and drum type drain cleaning machines”, but after careful examination, 5.8 kg of gold worth 3.10 crore Rs in disc form were found concealed inside two motor rotors of the machine imported in said consignment. The importer was located in South Mumbai and was quickly arrested. The importer was taken into custody by the court.
This seizure in Mumbai follows another seizure made by DRI officers in Lucknow a day earlier on May 5. Also in this case, DRI intercepted an import shipment believed to contain an “electric threading machine” at Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Air Cargo Complex. International Airport, Lucknow and gold discs were found concealed in the machines in a very similar fashion. A total of 5.2 kg of gold, valued at Rs 2.78 crore, was seized in this case.
Over the past year, DRI has made significant seizures of gold in freight and courier shipments. In July 2021, DRI had seized 16.79 kg of gold, worth Rs 8 crore, in a courier shipment, followed by a seizure of 80.13 kg of contraband gold, worth of Rs 39.31 crore, in November 2021 in a freight consignment – both to New Delhi.
In yet another case in August 2021, DRI had detected the use of a similar mode of concealment of contraband gold in a shipment arriving at the International Courier Terminal in Mumbai. DRI had recovered 5.25 kg of concealed gold, valued at Rs 2.67 crore, from this import shipment.
These series of detections uncovered a new modus operandi of smuggling foreign gold into India through air cargo and courier route. Such detections enhance DRI’s ability to detect and combat unique and sophisticated smuggling methods. In 2021-22, DRI officers had made seizures of 833 kg of contraband gold, worth Rs 405 crore.
