Another arrested in a gold smuggling plot

Man arrested coordinated two gangs’ plan to steal 2kg of contraband gold, police say

The task force investigating the Ramanattukara accident and related gold smuggling case on Saturday caught a 26-year-old from Koduvally who was suspected of being an accomplice in the incident.

Police sources said that Fijas Abdulkhader, brother of Sufiyan, who is the main defendant in the case, was involved in the connection of the two smuggling gangs near Kozhikode International Airport in the plot to seize more than 2 kg of contraband gold from a passenger. The five people, who died in the Ramanattukara crash on June 21, were part of one of those gangs he interacted with, police said.

Meanwhile, Fijas, who has been remanded in connection with the case, has claimed his innocence in the incident. He told Kondotty Police that he arrived at the international airport on June 21 to pick up a friend of his. However, the police rejected his claims based on certain prosecution evidence, including detailed call tapes, collected at various locations.

Fijas is said to be questioned again in the presence of five other people, who had already been arrested in connection with the conspiracy case and recently taken into police custody for further investigation. On Saturday, the five were taken to various locations around Ramanattukara to collect evidence. The search was also stepped up for two other people, who allegedly colluded with the gangsters to instigate the plot.
